Chinese medicine diagnosis is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine. It systematically explains the theory and methods of traditional Chinese medicine to identify the cause and pathogenesis of diseases and analyze the constitution, location and course of diseases through the four diagnostic methods of observation, auscultation, questioning and palpation.

The four diagnostic methods—observation, auscultation, questioning, and palpation—are integral to understanding the patient's condition holistically. In TCM, the focus is not just on the symptoms but also on the overall balance of the body's systems.

  1. Observation involves looking at the patient's appearance, including their tongue and complexion.
  2. Auscultation and olfaction refer to listening to sounds and smelling odors related to the patient's health.
  3. Questioning involves asking detailed questions about the patient's symptoms, lifestyle, and medical history.
  4. Palpation involves feeling the pulse and other parts of the body to gather more information.

It's fascinating how TCM combines these methods to create a comprehensive picture of a patient's health.

Traditional Chinese medicine divides human constitution into nine basic types, each of which has its own specific characteristics and conditioning methods, as follows:

Types Characteristics Conditioning methods
Peaceful constitution healthy body, well-proportioned body, ruddy complexion, energetic, good sleep, strong adaptability‌. maintain regular living habits, balanced diet, and moderate exercise‌.

Phlegm dampness constitution heavy moisture in the body, easy edema, poor appetite, greasy skin‌. regulate the spleen and stomach, remove moisture and phlegm, eat light food, eat more vegetables, fruits, and coarse grains; exercise moderately, such as jogging and walking‌.
Damp heat constitution‌ heavy moisture and heat in the body, dry mouth and bitter taste, itchy skin, easy to get acne‌. clear heat and dampness, avoid spicy and greasy foods, eat more heat-clearing foods such as mung beans and water spinach; keep the living environment dry, and exercise moderately‌.

The identification and conditioning methods of the above nine constitutions can help individuals take appropriate health measures according to their own physical characteristics and maintain good health.
