Huawei offers awarding millions to the global for solving problems surrounding data storage

Recently, Huawei announced the 2024 Olympusian Problem at the 2024 Global Data Storage Professors Forum.

There are two Olympus Awards, one for each direction, and if there is a vacancy in a certain direction, 1-2 Olympus Pioneer Awards will be added. The Olympus Award is worth RMB 1 million and the Olympuse Pioneer Award is RMB 500,000 each, aiming to attract the world's top scientific research talents to explore cutting-edge technologies in the field of data storage.

This year's Olympus conundrum includes two directions: one is the storage technology with the ultimate cost performance per bit, and the other is the new data base for the AI era.

Through this event, Huawei hopes to promote breakthroughs among researchers around the world in the areas of large-scale data processing storage architecture, hierarchical storage media application innovation for massive data, large-scale model storage cluster technology, enterprise/edge cost-effective training and promotion technology, new form of storage, new data management and efficient processing technologies in AI scenarios, and so on.

According to Huawei, the OlympusMons Awards were established by Huawei in 2019 to drive basic theoretical research in the field of global data storage, break through key technical problems, accelerate the industrialization of scientific research achievements, and achieve win-win cooperation between industry, academia and research.

In terms of previous achievements, the team of Prof. Torsten Hoefler from ETH Zurich and Prof. Allergy from Shanghai Jiao Tong University won the 2023 Olympus Prize. Prof. You Yang's team from the National University of Singapore, Prof. John Kim from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Prof. Yang Tong's team from Peking University, and Prof. Wang Ying's team from the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences won the 2023 Olympus Pioneer Award.

The team led by Prof. Onur Mutlu from ETH Zurich won the 2022 Olympus Award for its research on data-centric network-storage-computing convergence systems, innovative adaptive optimization algorithms, and accelerated the technical iteration of storage architectures. Prof. Hai Jin's team from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Prof. Weisheng Zhao's team from Beihang University, Prof. Miao Xiangshui's team from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Prof. Jian Liu's team from Zhejiang University won the 2022 Olympus Pioneer Award.

In terms of the list of winners of the 2021 Olympus, the team of Academician Zheng Weimin from Tsinghua University won the "Olympus Award", the team of Academician Liu Ming from the Institute of Microelectronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the team of Professor Song Zhitang from the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the team of Professor Lu Yutong from Sun Yat-sen University won the "Olympus Pioneer Award", and the scientific research award was 500,000 yuan.

During HUAWEI CONNECT 2020, the winners of the Olympus Awards 2020 were officially announced. The team of Professor Shu Jiwu from Tsinghua University won the "Olympuse Award" and the "Millions of Hanging Awards", and the team of Professor Chen Rong from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the team of Professor Feng Dan from Huazhong University of Science and Technology won the "Olympus Pioneer Award" respectively.

据华为数据存储公众号，近日，华为在2024年全球数据存储教授论坛上，宣布了2024年奥林帕斯难题悬红。

奥林帕斯难题百万悬红设立两个奥林帕斯奖，每个难题方向各一个，如果某个难题方向大奖空缺，增设1—2个奥林帕斯先锋奖。奥林帕斯奖奖金为100万元人民币/个，奥林帕斯先锋奖奖金50万元人民币/个，旨在吸引全球顶尖科研人才共同探索数据存储领域的前沿技术。

今年的奥林帕斯难题悬红包括两个方向：一是每比特极致性价比的存储技术，二是面向AI时代的新型数据底座。华为希望今年与学术界在以面向大规模数据处理的存储体系结构创新、面向海量数据的分级存储介质应用创新、面向大模型的存储集群技术、面向企业/边缘的高性价比训推技术及新形态存储、面向AI场景下的新型数据管理和高效处理技术等方向共同攻坚，构筑高质量的数据存储系统。

华为希望通过这一悬赏活动，推动全球科研人员在大规模数据处理的存储体系结构创新、海量数据的分级存储介质应用创新、大模型存储集群技术、企业/边缘高性价比训推技术及新形态存储、AI场景下的新型数据管理和高效处理技术等方向实现突破。

据华为介绍，“奥林帕斯奖”（OlympusMons Awards）由华为于2019年起设立，旨在牵引全球数据存储领域基础理论研究方向，突破关键技术难题，加速科研成果产业化，实现产学研合作共赢。

往届成果方面，苏黎世联邦理工学院Torsten Hoefler教授团队以及上海交通大学过敏意教授团队荣获2023年奥林帕斯奖。来自新加坡国立大学尤洋教授团队、韩国科学技术院John Kim教授团队、北京大学杨仝老师团队、中国科学院计算技术研究所王颖老师团队获得2023年奥林帕斯先锋奖。
