Indications: For syndromes of qi deficient, spleen deficient and yang deficient, marked by weakness and fatigue, numbness of limb, morbidity after stroke, sweating. Helps promote pus discharge and tissue regeneration, promotes diuresis to reduce edema, lower blood sugar in cases of diabetes.*
Dosage per day: For adults, 0.5-2 g each time, 3 times daily. (This Astragalus root extract is suggested to take 1 small teaspoon, about 1 g, before or with meals. In comparison to non-extract Astragalus root powder it is suggested to take 6-10 g each time)
Cautions and Contra-indications: It cannot be used in liver yang ascending type of hypertension but can be use in qi deficient and blood deficient type of hypertension (usually used in large dosage).
Huang qi is a strong tonic and can raise the function of the body, thus it is not suitable to use in acute infections, like cold or flu, boils, skin ulcers, yin deficient with fever, digestive tract infection.

Astragalus mongholicus Bunge
huang qi is more commonly prescribed as bei qi 北芪, meaning "northern huang qi". Northern huang qi is considered to be better. Mainly produced in Shanxi, Heilongjiang provinces and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, also produce in Jilin, Gansu, Hebei, Shaanxi and northeastern part of China.
Astragalus root is classified into restoratives for invigorating qi in TCM. Herbs in this group are sweet in taste and warm or neutral in nature, and can replenish the qi of the spleen and lungs. Astragalus root or Milkvetch root is sweet in taste and slightly warm in nature, meridian affinity for the spleen and lungs.
Astragalus root can replenish qi, raise yang, enhance the defensive function of the body surface, eliminate poison, promote regeneration of muscles, promote discharge of water, resolve edema, stimulate hematopoiesis, remove stagnation, produce saliva and relieve thirst, to treat poor appetite, loose stool, shortness of breath, weakness of the body, chronic diarrhea, prolapse of the rectum, hematochezia and profuse uterine bleeding.
